CAREX RADIATA

A cool season clumping sedge found in savannas and woodlands, Straight-styled Wood Sedge forms tidy clumps of about one foot high and wide. Preferring wet-mesic to mesic soils, delicate light green blades elegantly drift over when seeds ripen. The star-like flowers ripen to seeds consumed by various birds.

CAREX JAMESII

James' Sedge is an attractive, small, mat-forming, sedge with soft, shiny, pale green leaves making it a nice border plant for the woodland garden. Also known as Grass Sedge, it is found in mesic savannas and a variety of open woodland habitats, often on slopes.

Carex muskingumensis

Typically found in savannas, Palm Sedge thrives in wet-mesic to dry-mesic soils and will form robust colonies with consistent moisture. An interesting sedge for the rain garden, its spreading leaf blades resemble palm fronds. Many butterflies, moths and skippers use it as larval food and several species of birds consume the seeds.

Solidago Flexicaulis

A goldenrod found in savannas and woodlands, ZigZag Goldenrod thrives in nearly any soil and reaches about three feet high. Its stems tend to zigzag between the dark green toothed leaves. A cluster of yellow florets blooms August through October. As with all goldenrods, it is beloved by pollinators and many moths use it as a larval host.

LOBELIA CARDINALIS

Cardinal Flower’s unusual brilliant red blossoms with distinct lobed petals light up the moist garden, prairie or savanna. The tall stems reach about four feet and begin blooming in June. The flowers attract ruby throated hummingbirds and swallowtail butterflies. This perennial needs to be moist to wet to be successful.

Penstemon calycosus

Calico Beardtongue is an adaptable penstemon that forms a rosette of deep green foliage in moist to mesic conditions. Beginning in June, sturdy flower stalks decorated with large tubular white flowers appear and flower nearly a month. A favorite of bees, it is also visited occasionally by sphinx moths and hummingbirds.

The plants we selected create a thriving, naturally connected habitat that is both beautiful and beneficial to local wildlife. Native woodland flowers, grasses, sedges, and other plants complement the Paw Paw’s natural growing environment while providing additional food, shelter, and habitat for pollinators, birds, and other wildlife. Together, these plants create a layered, diverse ecosystem that supports biodiversity and helps your landscape function as a healthy, resilient natural community—not simply a collection of individual plants.
